Dutch Education in Singapore

With an International Dimension

Holland International School offers high-quality Dutch primary education in Singapore, preparing pupils for an international future. Through our Dutch Stream, we ensure that children maintain and develop their Dutch language skills at the highest level, while also receiving English as an additional language.

We are proud to be the only school in Singapore offering full-day Dutch primary education based on the Dutch National Curriculum.

The Dutch Stream

The Dutch Stream provides a complete Dutch primary education programme for children from Groep 1 to Groep 8 (eight full school years).

Our teaching is based on the Dutch National Curriculum and follows the official kerndoelen (core learning objectives) as established by the Dutch Education Inspectorate. Core subjects such as mathematics, Dutch language, reading and spelling are taught at the same high standard as in the Netherlands.

In addition, pupils follow the International Primary Curriculum (IPC), which enriches learning through subjects such as geography, history, science and the arts, offering an international dimension to our Dutch education.

English as an Additional Language

While lessons in the Dutch Stream are taught in Dutch, we fully recognise the importance of developing strong English skills in an international environment.

Daily English lessons are based on the English National Curriculum and are delivered by qualified native English-speaking teachers. This ensures that children become confident bilingual learners, well-prepared for an international world.

Supporting Balanced Bilingual Development

In an international setting, children naturally develop strong English skills through daily exposure at school and in the wider community. At the same time, maintaining a high level of Dutch requires purposeful support, especially as children grow older and academic language becomes more complex.

At Holland International School, we provide a rich Dutch learning environment in which pupils continue to build strong literacy and vocabulary skills in their mother tongue. This ensures that children develop confidently in both languages, benefiting academically and socially from a truly bilingual education.

Transition to Secondary Education

Some international schools offer only one or two hours of Dutch lessons per week. This is not comparable to the full Dutch primary education that we provide.

At Holland International School, pupils complete the full Dutch programme, including the official Doorstroomtoets in Groep 8. We also provide a well-supported transition towards secondary education, including tailored advice for entry into Dutch and Belgian secondary schools (VO).

Families returning to the Netherlands or Belgium can be confident that their child will be able to transition smoothly into the Dutch education system, while also benefiting from strong English proficiency.
